BREAKING NEWS: Accidental Shooting at KC Health Department Injures One

Breaking News
[of particular interest to Kansas City readers...]

At approximately 9:00 a.m. a handgun carried in a clients purse accidentally discharged twice in the offices of the KCMO Health Department. The first round grazed the leg of another client, who was treated at the scene by paramedics who responded to the 911 call, but did not require treatment at a hospital. The second round did not hit anyone.

At about 9:00 a.m., one of the busiest times of the day at the KCMOHD, a man and woman entered the facility as clients. When she sat her purse down, the gun inside discharged, grazing another clients leg. The man then picked up the purse and the gun discharged again.

The clients who brought the gun onto government property fled the scene, but the security cameras give the police quite a bit of good information to go on, and a spokesman for the health department returned a call promptly, and told me that the health department is cooperating with the ongoing police investigation.

Security and EMS response was just about as good as it gets - and a response like they mounted immediately was why we go to a lot of trouble to train and do drills - so when something bad happens, we can respond in constructive and helpful ways, rather than just setting our hair on fire and pissing our pants. I am proud of my first responder colleagues today.

We will update with further information as it becomes available.
