It has been a hell of a day, to cap off a hell of a week.
We started the week with the resignation of Gonzo, but that was quickly overshadowed by the outing of another GOP family-values type busted cruising mens rooms for anonymous gay sex. This time, it was a sitting U.S. Senator - Larry "Cleopatra" Craig of Idaho.
Steve Clemmons broke the news that Mikey "War Critic My Ass" O'Hanlon is under contract to propaganda-network Alhurra. As the week wore on, we got news that the Resident plans to hit up the congress for an additional $50 Billion dollars for the continued occupation of Iraq, but he left his Secretary of Defense out of the plotting and scheming.
It was a week that saw some officials leaking the findings of a pending GAO report because they feared the grim findings would be watered down by the time it was released, and other officials leaking parts of another report because they wanted to blunt the damning condemnations the report found by inoculating the public a little, hoping for a bit of desensitization.
Somewhere along the line, we learned that Senator Johnson would be returning to the Senate after the recess. Good news indeed.
Yesterday, a plane carrying three Republican war-supporting Senators and a blue-dog war-supporting Democrat from Alabama was fired on as it left Baghdad, and had to take evasive measures. In spite of the fact that Inhofe was aboard, I'm glad the crew didn't perish. Idiotic Senators are a dime a dozen, but a good C-130 crew - those people I care about.
And we hadn't even arrived at Friday yet, but hey - we had plenty of indicators that it was going to be a 'hell of a day at sea.'
We woke up to find out that the propaganda surrounding the dog and pony shows is a two way street. Not only do they orchestrate and script the visits, they also unduly influence the visited with cherry-picked bios of the potentates that come to visit. War supporters get the bios on their websites distributed - war critics.....don't.
By the end of the day, we had learned that Craig will hold a press conference tomorrow, and he is expected to resign his seat in the Senate. Senator Warner announced he will retire at the end of his term, and Tony Snow is the latest rat to abandon the sinking ship of the Bush administration.
And in Iowa - a dozen happy couples are celebrating tonight. They were legally married today after a County Judge threw out the ban on gay marriage yesterday. Mazel Tov to each and every one! May your marriages be long and happy, and may you know nothing but good fortune!
Did I miss anything? I'm sure I did, so point out my shortcomings in comments.
